National Colosseum

Master of Architecture Thesis: 2024

Thesis Studio Professor: James McCrery

The stadium is fundamentally a civic structure. As such it should strive to assimilate to the civic language of its host city and larger context. A truly civic stadium can also be much more than a destination for a game - and in the specific context of Washington D.C. - it should serve as a monument, a landmark and a gathering place.

This thesis proposes a design for a new National Colosseum, surrounding Powhatan National Park, and refreshed Whitney Young Memorial bridge to establish a grand eastern gateway to the city at the eastern terminus of East Capitol St. NE, consistent with the monumental axis on which the site exists.
